About Qian Rong’s “Lone Island Forum”
ink on xuan paper
43 x 43cm
2011
At a certain point in time in time Shanghai was called an island. There is also a place called Fuxing Island on Huangpu River. Nowadays it doesn’t play an important role in Shanghai, as it is far away from mainstream life, but it still has something to do with history. It was said that Chiang Kai-shek set sail from Fuxing Island when he left the Mainland. The imagery in these works attempts to evoke the memory of history. We interpret history according to own understanding, in this way pondering reality. In its essence history is a mirror, reflecting the past and foreseeing the future.
